The site now known as George Washington Birthplace National Monument was used by American Indians thousands of years before George Washington’s ancestors settled there. The location of the area between Popes Creek, Bridges Creek and the Potomac River resulted in a landscape rich in natural resources, which was just as attractive to the Europeans who first settled the area in the 1650s as it was to the Indians. Crabs, oysters, fish and wild game were abundant sources of food. Thick hardwood forests were available for building and firewood. European settlers also discovered that the land was just right for growing tobacco, which became the main cash crop of Colonial America and was used to purchase everything from land to fabric. The land at George Washington Birthplace National Monument still supports an abundance of the same resources both American Indians and the Washington family would have used to survive and thrive. Now under the management of the National Park Service, those resources are protected so that everyone may enjoy them. What does “a good piece of land” mean to you?
